Conversations with random people on airplanes...

Random Guy: The rapture is coming soon.

Me: Well, if you dissapear from your seat I will know either the rapture happened or you went to the lavatory.

RG: Son, this is not a joking matter.

Me:

RG: I can help you find Jesus.

Me: I really did not know that he was lost.

RG: You have empty place in your heart. I can see it.

Me: Is that a Rolex?

RG: Yes. The lord has been good to me.

Me: There is an old biblical proverb that says "It's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of god."

RG:

Me:

RG: Umm yeah, I need a beer.

Me: I believe in god, I believe god is wonderful. I just do not feel a need to preach to random people on airplanes.

RG:

Hmmm. You were much more polite than I would have been.

You know, I wonder, how the heck do you meet these people.. oh.. that's right, you travel versus me being in a room with 20 eight year olds.. I guess I answered my own question.. lol.. yes, I am laughing at myself.. it's healthy.

I was having fun with him Jules. He was entertaining and the looks he gave were prieless.

Stop persecuting christians, Jess.

That's my job. Problem with the Promise Keepers:
Christians + Stadium - Lions = No Fun.

Jess,

That was priceless. As a gen-you-wine Bible thumper, I thought the exchange was very funny. And I can imagine the looks.

As for me ... what I like to do on planes is just whip out a match and set the person next to me on fire (read: the fattest person on the plane). Then, as he/she is screaming, I say ... "You think that's hot? ..." But, any way.

Let's just say ... some of us Christians are not so smooth, or tactful. This we can agree on. But ...

Some of the Secular Fundamentalists like Ralph apparently have their own issues.

Wow ... Was that funny, Ralph!!? You never cease to amaze.

Here's my issue, asshole:

I grew up evangelical. Read the bible cover to cover three times.

You evil bastards have taken everything out of context and ruined what should be a monumental philosophy on life: That the well-being of others is paramount and it is God's place to judge, not ours.

Instead, you pull out obscure passages and justify your own hatred and warmongering.

Yup. Hard to convert the ones who have consciously chosen to leave the flock.

"That the well-being of others is paramount and it is God's place to judge, not ours."
Yes, Ralph.

Oookay, let's take this step by step.

Here's my issue, asshole:

tsk tsk, let's not be too judgemental now.

I grew up evangelical. Read the bible cover to cover three times.

Wow. That's reminds me of the story of my friend Tara who ate three mothballs because her older sister told her they were candy. Yep. Mothballs. Not one, three!

You evil bastards have taken everything out of context and ruined what should be a monumental philosophy on life: That the well-being of others is paramount and it is God's place to judge, not ours.

Actually, it's the ultimate judgement that is Gods. God has set down rules for us to use as we judge each other. Trials and imprisonment are not in contradiction with scripture.

Judging the righteousness of others is God's purview alone as He is the only One who knows our hearts (even better than WE do). But, that doesn't mean that we can't take the Standards, as we best understand them, and tell others about them. That's called "conversation".

Instead, you pull out obscure passages and justify your own hatred and warmongering.

"It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven" is an obscure passage? That's a pretty famous one, actually. And how obscure can it be, I mean, you've read it three times.

Dang. HTML isn't turned on for the comments! Fix it, Jess!!!

Dang! I posted as "Harvey"! It's me! Tuning Spork! Ugh!

Posted by: Tuning Spork at May 18, 2005 07:09 PM

TS,
I hate to sound stupid but of course I am at least according to Will, but I have not a clue how to turn on my html. Can you help?

Posted by: jess @ LOSLI at May 18, 2005 07:36 PM

Ralph,

So, if you think (interestingly, without knowing what I think) that I am not a real Christian, great ... then tell me what one is. You seem to admire the philosophy that you discerned from the scriptures ... look out for others first, and let God judge.

And speaking of judging, how would you know what is in my heart ... i.e., hate? Only God knows the heart, according to the Bible.

So, why the attack on Christians as a group, if crazies like me have distorted what it means to be a true Christian?

Consider: Would your comments have been funny if you had been describing another group, such as Jews + Chamber - Gas? What could possibly be funny about such a slur ... unless perhaps you hate the group you are talking about?

Point is: If you hate, you are only hurting yourself.

I know your heart because you wear it on your sleeve, "Daisycutter." A "Daisycutter" is a 2-ton bomb that the US dropped on Iraq. It generates an inverse pressure that pops children's ear drums and explodes their eyes out of their sockets, but leaving them alive to clutch at their ears or the shattered remnants of their face.

Yeah, those are EXACTLY the kinds of values I did NOT learn when reading the Bible.

Posted by: Ralph at May 19, 2005 11:02 AM

Since we’re talking religion… ;)

The resident dirt loving tree hugger has to step in with this gem… honest, no disrespect intended… just a different perspective:

"If you take the Christian Bible and put it out in the wind and the rain, soon the paper on which the words are printed will d!sintegrate and the words will be gone. Our bible IS the wind and the rain."

Jess,

Login, click on "manage weblog".

On the left sidebar click "weblog config".

At the top of the page click "preferences".

About halfway down, under "comment configuration", there's a box with an option: "Allow html in comments".

Put a check in the box. That's it!

:D

Oh, then Save and Rebuild!

Posted by: Tuning Spork at May 19, 2005 08:46 PM

Ralph,

You continue to amaze. So ... you know my heart, b/c it is on my sleeve? You know why I chose the name Daisy Cutter? Indeed. You are the first person to figure out that the reason I chose the name is because of the bomb's effects on children. Very perceptive. Congratulations.

I am glad to hear, too, that accept the values taught in the Bible.
