I found other non-union Dems. Julie B, had a guest poster whom identified themselves as doggystyle in her comments. Chuck from B-trans is like me and anti-union? Is this a movement? Doubtful... though, Kevin Drum appears to be likeminded as well.
I agree with Doggystyle that unions have outdated themselves, and that the Democratic party... if they want to become a true party of the people, need to be for the people.
Ahh, a place to discuss my anti-union beliefs.
In the town where I live, the primary industry is the local paper mill. My father worked there for over 30 years before he retired. When there was a strike at the mill in the 80's, my father (being management) crossed the picket lines.
The hardworking, down-to-earth union members showed their kindness by making threatening phone calls to my parents' home and slashing my mothers tires at the local Wal-Mart.
That's why I dislike unions on an emotional level.
I dislike them on an intellectual level because I believe their time has passed here in America. Like it or not (personally I DO like it), we are now in a global economy. Unions now mainly negotiate higher salaries and benefits for already overpaid and low-to-no skilled workers. The industries employing those workers see that they can receive the same quality of work for a much lower cost in another location, so they move. The unions effectively just put those workers out of a job.
That's why I don't like unions.
